My little bookworm
Fridays are settling into a nice little rhythm at the moment. First, a trip to the library to return books and select new ones. Then a trip round the supermarket (for some reason this is still regarded as "fun" by my children, if not so much by me!), home for lunch and off to Littler G's gym class, then back for an afternoon of playing and general mooching. Now it's the school holidays, Little G has to come with us to watch while I help her during the class, which I think does them both good. It's normally the other way round, with little sister being required to watch her older brother in action, so it's nice for her - and for him - for the audience / participator relationship to work the other way round for a change.
We're recent converts to our local library. I'm still not convinced about its adult selection, and the staff aren't the most helpful I've ever encountered, but the children's sections are just about perfect. It is lovely to see how excited both of them currently get by the prospect of a visit there, and how keen they are to look through their new acquisitions before we've even got home - long may that continue.
Little G has been able to read since about Easter, and is relishing being able to explore books and stories on his own. It's lovely to hear him reading stories to his little sister (particularly in the morning, as it gives me chance to have a peaceful bath!) but he also is increasingly enjoying just curling up on his own with a book. This is a very typical pose at the moment, and bears more than a passing resemblance to my memories of myself as a child.
I should have waited. Not half an hour later, the pair of them are curled up together on an armchair while big brother reads his sister one of the new library books... so very sweet to see.
