Te Whatu Manga Nui Ki Te Tai
The Taurapa is a 9 metre steel sculpture, which is the Stern post of a Waka [Canoe] and beside it lies a Pakohe [Anchor stone]. It symbolizes the settlement of Whakatu [Nelson] by the Maori and the anchor stone symbolizes the connection between land, river and sea. This is important symbol for us as New Zealanders as we still are mostly hunter gathers and enjoy the spoils of the sea and land. The title translates "Great eyed shark on the tide"
