Vulcano
We took a slow start to the day, undecided as whether to explore more of Lipari on our last Aeolian day, or go visit Vulcano, the nearby island. Events conspired to have us soon on the ferry and spotting sulphur flumes emanating from the volcano. Half a mile from the terminal, we were met with a traffic light at the start of the trail. It was showing green, giving us the good to go. I'm not sure I'd want to be around when it's on red! Volcanoes always make for spectacular walking. The geology is right in your face, giving lie to our belief in a world of permanence and solidity. We live on a sliver of a membrane, floating on magma, thousands of miles in depth. Perhaps it's no bad thing we don't think about that too much. From the summit we were able to see all seven of the habited islands here. I've a strong feeling I will get to visit them all in time. I hope so.
The sun shone from a blue sky all day, although it wasn't that warm, no more than 13 deg, actually colder than back home, as I found out later, which is quite mad. Not complaining! Also, my knee wasn't complaining so much today. I was even able to run on it. All is good.
