Another walk at Swy a lana lagoon, but today a focus on our famous mayor.  Born in England, moved to Canada in 1946, started a realty company with his brother, but shortly after ran for Mayor and won, and won....  he was mayor for 21 years!  He was friendly to everyone and became known for attending civic events dressed as a pirate, so of course his statue had to reflect this.
On the plus side, he made Nanaimo internationally famous for the annual Bathtub Race, originally a race across Georgia Strait from Nanaimo to Vancouver but now starts and ends in Nanaimo - a great draw for tourism.                https://www.bathtubbing.com/
On the negative side he amassed large land holdings which required him to often leave council meetings due to Conflicts of Interest.  He had 11 children (the last one adopted), some of his descendants still active in politics and / or real estate.
