Gila woodpecker

back blip by a day...

Gila woodpeckers are an important part of the Sonoran desert ecosystem.  These birds pick off/out bugs that would otherwise damage or kill saguaros. They are primarily responsible for the cavities in the giant cactus but other birds contribute to carving them out, too. They also like the hummingbird nectar and frequently try to suck it out of my feeders.   I didn't really do much to this other than a crop.  The bird was in the shade, and despite the brief appearance of the sun, it was mostly a dreary, rainy day.

SON: Can we go to a haunted house this year?
DAD: What's wrong with the one we live in?
SON: Huh?
DAD: Goodnight...
