Pair of Pileated Woodpeckers

From the Rail Trail we followed this pair of pileateds intermittently for over 15 minutes. This was the best view, though fairly far across the marsh (36 meters/40 yards according to the camera's EXIF data).

The top bird is an adult male, and the lower one most likely a hatch-year female (perhaps from this nest blipped in April very near by). For the curious: The adult has a yellow iris and a red moustache (as a male); the lower bird has a dark iris, its crest is less high, and its plumage has a brownish tinge (hence it's young) and the red on its head does not extend to the forehead (thus probably female). These details (not all evident in this image) are from my ornithologist friend David.
