Waverley Abbey

When Henry VIII decided to split from the Catholic Church in Rome he dissolved many of the religious centres across Britain, including this one, the first Cistercian Abbey in England, Waverley Abbey established in 1128.

Along with other monastic buildings across the country this one was largely demolished, and the stones reused in local buildings, including the adjacent Waverley Abbey House.  What you see today is what has been left behind.
