Dairy sign

Today I took a shortcut through Whitcomb Street in central London when I saw a sign that brought me right back to the late 70s when this very same outIet (no.25) was a grocery shop. The premises may have been a dairy at an earlier time.

I think the two women who, most likely, owned the shop knew their days were numbered. The shelves around the walls carried very little stock. There was a counter where they displayed hams on the bone and made sandwiches. You could also buy orange juice in small milk bottles. On the wall behind them they stacked tinned goods in little pyramids. I remember the whole place being pale green. This was not a thriving street and I doubt the shop lasted much longer.
