Defying Gravity

Cynthia Erivo- Defying Gravity

Woke up earlier than usual today with a lot of energy. Did a whole bunch of stuff and then some. Went out with the Mrs to see Wicked at a Dolby Cinema. Just like the live show, the movie was really entertaining. I’m not normally a musical person, since no musicals can beat West Side Story.

The movie moved at a very nice pace and presented a really nice stage feel. The dancers and props felt real. What the movie also was able to do well was present the characters close up and provide more intimate views that aren’t shown on stage. Cynthia Erivo and Arianna Grande nailed it. Erivo was very subtle and it was easy to root for her, her eyes and subtle inflections were very purposeful and suited the interplay against the other characters. Ariana Grande was hilarious, even during the credits, her role was listed as Galinda / Glinda. I’m not a fan of Ariana Grande’s pop music but seriously… get her in more musicals! She’s perfect for them and sells it well.

With the success of this, I hope there’s a small revival of musicals at the theatre. I’d imagine a musical starring Lady Gaga AND Ariana Grande would be freaking epic.
