Turn Towards the Light
After the gloom and doom of the last couple of days, I needed something uplifting, so I bought some lovely tulips. Just the sight of them makes me think of spring. I trained as a florist many, many years ago and one of the things we learned about tulips is that unlike other flowers, they continue to grow even after they are cut. That's because the cells in their stems are particularly responsive to the plant hormone auxin, which causes them to elongate. Auxin also influences phototropism — the tendency of plants to grow or turn toward light. Sunflowers are famous for that. So, another metaphor to contemplate today. Even if you are cut down, keep pushing forward and always turn towards the light. Helen Keller once said, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows”. Very good advice for today's world.
