Tawaki- Fiordland Crested Penguin

This beauty is sleeping soundly having just had an anaesthetic. He was found with a badly injured toe. Possible bite that had deteriorated badly. Our vet has been treating it for a while with no healing happening. I helped this afternoon with the anaesthetic while our vet made the decision to amputate part of the toe. They need their feet/claws to climb rocks, so once healed this beauty will continue on its way home. Such an experience to be so close to this fellow. His coat is so soft.
