A Day In The Dales

We had no agenda today, except making sure Arlo got some decent walks. After breakfast, another fine meal, we had a wee look around Downham in the daylight and indeed it is a lovely village (see extra). But Malham was top of Mrs C's list so we headed off there and decided to do the long loop walk. Janet's Foss was first on the path (foss being Icelandic for waterfall) then Gordale Scar and boy was it rough (top left) and at the end another waterfall (top right). Despite the cliffs being grey the rocks in the water were sandstone. Then onwards and upwards to Malham Cove (bottom left and right), a massive rockface with a table of cracked stone on the top like sliced tablet. I will need to find out more about how this was formed, the top (table) was water beaten like rocks at the seaside. Harry Potter had scenes here, will need to rewatch! While Mrs C walked down the steps and back to the car, Arlo and I continued on the loop walk another 4 miles, which was mostly in the mist so not any views until we began descending. An 8 mile walk over 4 hours and I was certainly ready to sit down. Hotel booked on the way near Kendal, not quite as comfortable as last night and we'd probably have been happy staying there had it not been the longer journey onwards. Home tomorrow after some big decisions.
