Grumpy Old Man

Books - and more books!

An average day, overcast, odd patches of sunshine, not too warm. Having cut all the necessary pieces of wood for my greenhouse staging yesterday I began to assemble them. Not that easy - some of the wood is warped and my cuts could have been better, but I made a start.

Once a month, on the 3rd of the month, the Benderloch community just north of Oban hosts its Bookends event when the Victory Hall is open from 11am to 4pm for anyone to attend, browse, borrow, read or take away books from their huge collection. It’s usual to have a speaker during the afternoon and today was local man Colin Evans, a retired journalist who now writes short stories. He read a couple of his stories and suggested that we all write a short story of our own, to read out at a future event. The prompt word is to be ‘Victory’.  I took a few books with me and came away with a few too - I may not keep them all!

On Thursday the Oban & Lorn Writer’s Group - why have I never heard of them? - is holding an open evening at the library, inviting the public to bring favourite stories, poems or whatever to read or just to listen to others. This is in addition to the library’s own ‘Flash Fiction’ monthly competition. Three writing groups in this small town!
