Solid Light

Just one exhibition today - the Anthony McCall show in Tate Modern. And this is after another lazy morning recovering from the previous day.

We enjoy a walk over Blackfriars Bridge and along the South Bank in beautiful spring sunshine, stopping for an Al fresco coffee while we watch families playing on the river beach below.

We meet Simon at the exhibition space and enjoy close to an hour wandering amongst the Solid Light installations.  The space is obviously dark, the light projections forming shapes within the mist.  It’s disorienting - and actually finding G and Simon within the space is almost impossible.  But the shapes are both fascinating and beautiful.

I spend much of my time just watching others interact with the shapes of light.  Hands and heads emerge from the rays, children crawl along within or beneath light cones. Then there are the abstract shapes formed as the projections change both of their own accord and through human interaction.  Photographically it’s mesmerising -  though low light inevitably means ISO levels are ridiculous high. Hard to decide on what to blip, but eventually I’ve decided to go with a small child enchanted by the light, with a variety of others as extras. And as it’s St David’s Day, I’ve added a photo from Meols of Daniel, Lili and the Welsh cakes they have made.

I’ve included an extract from the show’s description:

‘Your movements and interactions bring artworks to life inside Solid Light, a focused exhibition dedicated to the immersive works of Anthony McCall.
Beams of light projected through a thin mist create large three-dimensional forms in space, which slowly shift and change. As you move through these translucent sculptures of light, you’ll create new shapes and discover your own mesmerising perspectives. Occupying a space between sculpture, cinema, drawing, and performance, McCall is known for his innovative installations of light.’

Thanks for following our brief London sojourn - I’ll be catching up with journals over the next few days.
