Brompton Cemetery

What a lovely day for a wander. I met Wendy in (the cafe in) Brompton Cemetery in West London. A walk in this cemetery has been on our to-do list for many years. It was built in 1840 and has over 200,000 graves. Some are those of very well-known people, such as Emmeline Pankhurst (Suffragette Movement) and John Wisden (Cricketers' Almanac.) There are graves of servicemen, scientists, artists, a Chelsea footballer, as well many Commonwealth War Graves.
After coffee we wandered for a good couple of hours, and then returned to the cafe for lunch too.
The funerary monument which most caught my eye was that of Frederick Richards Leyland - born in 1831. He had homes in Liverpool and London and was one of the largest British ship owners, running 25 steamships in the Transatlantic trade.
His funerary monument (a new term for me) is the finest Arts and Crafts type in the UK and is Grade II Listed. It was designed by Edward Burne-Jones.
