Castlegate Well

Continuing the occasional series of pictures of a building or monument which we see in Aberdeen, but maybe seldom notice. This is the Castlegate Well. It dates originally from 1708, but has been moved several times, most recently in 1972 when it was erected in its present position. The tower in the background belongs to the Town House at the eastern end of Union Street.

Although I have noticed this monument in the past I had no idea what it represented. Apparently it is also known as the Mannie Well, so named because of the man shown here. In its current position it is next to a bus stop and associated shelter, as well as being next to a very busy junction. As such it is largely lost in the traffic of day to day life.

As can be seen from the sky we continue to have good weather and sunshine despite the presence of a few clouds.
