Not the full anorak

Next time there's a big song and dance about the latest actor to take on the role of Doctor Who, I'm going to switch off my mobile phone.

Global broadcasts are fine and dandy, but no way was I getting up at 4 am on a Monday to find out. I love my sleep. I'm a nerd, but I've realised from this experience that I'm a pragmatic nerd with commitment issues.

I know plenty of people who did wake up for the broadcast. And frankly, I may as well have watched it, because the text messages started at 3.50am with "I know you're going to watch, no way are you going to sleep through it" and went through to 6am with many variations of "Yay! Peter Capaldi!!" These were followed throughout the day by sporadic texts telling me that the topic was still trending on twitter. All. Day.

I'm really pleased that Capaldi got the gig, because I thought they'd bring another whipper-snapper in. He'll restore faith to the Whoniverse. (Now all that's needed is some decent script-writing...)

Equally, I'm disturbed by how much of a non-fan I must be, because it didn't really feature on my radar for the day.

I saw perfect strangers, both wearing Doctor Who shirts, high-five each other. Ok, they were probably hard-core anorak wearers. But I received a barrage of emails and Youtube links all day, from otherwise sane individuals, so that it became the major theme of the day by default.

Which is why I've ended up blipping on the subject, because no matter who I spoke to, it's all they could talk about. By comparison, I wouldn't even merit a quarter-anorak status. Did the entire planet embrace nerdery and I didn't even notice?

P.S.: ignore the dust on the top of the TARDIS biscuit jar (and no, I didn't buy it).
