Christmas tin

They were sent from Princess Mary to all the troops in the trenches in 1914. They had cigarettes and chocolate inside. I wondered if they shared them during the impromptu truce on Christmas Day. The British could hear the Germans singing Stille Nacht so they joined them in English, Silent Night. The British troops joined the Germans in No Man’s land and were surprised to find they were just ordinary young men like them. Apparently the Germans had Christmas trees in their trenches that had been sent to them. They swapped presents like alcohol and cigarettes and had a kick about with a football.
My tin is quite battered but so are the ones I’ve seen in museums. My mum used it to keep pins and needles in it.  I think it must have belonged to my Uncle Bert who was the only one to be have been the age to fight in WWI.
