In the Killiecrankie gorge there is the Soldier’s Leap, the scene of one of the most amazing escapes during the Battle of Killicrankie between the Jacobites and government Redcoat soldiers in 1689. Acccording to reports the soldiers were trapped in a narrow gorge after the battle when Donald McBean decided the only way to escape was to jump across the rocky gorges of the River Garry. He lost his shoe and sword but unlike many of his fellow soldiers survived. What seems incredible if it is true, is that he managed to jump 5.5 metres (18.5 feet) across the raging waters without major injuries. The place is quite deep down so it was impossible to get a good photo but to give some idea of a similar water fall (but not in gorge) the extra shows another about an hour’s walk further south on the River Tummel. . It indicates the relative lack of water in the river compared with a photo taken at the same place 13 months ago.
