Glorious 70
Now that's the way to celebrate being 70! Bunting, lights, cake, wine, cheese, laughter and good company
This happiest of House-party weekends was held at beautiful Swanage Youth Hostel on the Dorset coast by a dear friend from student days. His wife, my best friend from school, I am sure was there in spirit, because making friends happy, with him, was her greatest joy.
Guest ages ranged from 3 years to 93. Fish and chips on Friday evening. Pea and pie lunch on Saturday, and more meals through Sunday. Plenty of time to socialise, go for a walk, explore the Charity shops, ride on the light rail and be back for more food.
Bucket-list adventures topped the conversation bill with plans for events, hot-air balloon rides over the pyramids, ski-ing in France (just let the last leg-break heal itself) plans to go visiting throughout the British Isles, taking courses for new skills and starting new businesses.
However, the world is turning now, we were and still are, born into the most privileged of generations, with a whole planet to explore, plus the education, health-care, freedom, wherewithal and time to do it.
With this has come a responsibility to give back and I was moved in that each one of the friends and aquaintances I spoke to there was deeply aware of this obligation and had tried the best they could in their varied and chosen fields to do some good in the world.
How blessed am I to have been part of that circle, because in the end, that is all the legacy that counts.
