neighbour rescue.  The world changes: you can't just slap your battery charger onto a car battery any more apparently.  First you must check what type of battery it is. Fortunately this old car was possesed of a wet lead-acid battery so OK.  Reminder to self:  automatic stop/start cars may have a glass matrix battery that is easily damaged by a simple charger.  Or lithium or calcium batteries etc.
