Juteopolis

It was really interesting to find out about Dundee’s social history when we toured this refurbished jute mill today. Who knew that women outnumbered the men by three to one in jute mills as they were cheaper to employ and not in unions. It wasn’t only the case in the jute industry, so much so that Dundee was also known as She Town.
There were relatively few alternative jobs for Dundonian men, so many of them became house husbands or ‘kettle bilers’ which Mr P said he’d have enjoyed!
Miserable day, cold, wet and windy but not as bad as back in Peebles apparently. Good to get back to the log fire in the cottage for more rugby and then Sunday night tv.
