No Kites were involved

A very draughty day with all ferries cancelled, anemometers blowing past in all directions and (even on the Sabbath) Mrs Groat’s smalls touching down in Spitsbergen.  From the porch we witnessed a great display of diving gannets.  Rendezvoused with the Foubisters for Sunday Lunch at the Kirk Gallery in Tankerness, our treat.  It was really tip top.

As advised by her therapist (and because she is a perspicacious woman) the Current Mrs Creel only occasionally reads my Blips.  And quite right too.  As an adjunct to the fact that I recently revealed we got engaged on  St Valentine’s Day, she mentioned that we had to make other wedding arrangements in an Aberdeen Dept store very soon after; on a Saturday.  I had a ticket to see the Dons at Pittodrie.  It was the infamous occasion that Aberdeen were 0 – 1 down at half-time.  Until his voice came over the tannoy, no-one knew Sir John Gielgud was at Pittodrie.  He attempted to stimulate the home support with a rousing chorus of ‘Come on ye Reds’.  This didn’t go down well with Warren Beatty (who until then had been busy perusing his programme) and wondering whether he could get wee Alickie’s autograph.  Obviously, Warren Beatty was then trying to raise funds to produce ‘Reds’ – his film wasn’t released until 1981*.  Mention of the Reds caused some kind of misunderstanding .  Not to be confused, Danny McGrain attempted one of his esoteric back passes which was caught in an updraught and ended up in the Cotton Street Gas Holder.  No relation of Noddy.  Or PC Plod who often felt Noddy’s collar.   The day of the game (in 1976) AFC had 30 players in the squad, twenty nine were Scottish.  This weekend AFC have 34 players in their squad and nine are Scottish.  As they say in Cruden Bay ‘Do you have a copy of the programme when Sir John trod the boards at the Boddam Hall?’.  Despite repeated life guidance from CMC, I sometimes still forget to put water in it.

*Debrett’s is unclear whether this was during the spell when Diane Keaton had a craving for kippers.
