30 Rutland Avenue
I went on a bit of a mystery tour with Mauzee this morning to see if the old house that my Dad grew up in with his five other siblings in Victoria Park. I honestly thought the chances of it still being there were nil as there has been so much development in the area. I had a clear memory of it being on a corner, definitely in Rutland Avenue and it overlooked the railway line. We trawled along the road and what do you know, there it was in all its humble glory. Still in its original state. Amazing to think that Dad would have lived there with Grandpa and Grandma over 100 years ago and it’s still standing. Dad used to court Mum when he was living there and I worked it out he used to have to walk 5.3km’s home if missed the last bus from East Perth to Victoria Park!! According to Grandad, he often had to alert Dad to the fact that if he didn’t stop canoodling on their front porch he would be doing just that…..walking home!! He was a real romantic old Dad and he made sure he was engaged to Mum before he went of to fly Lancaster in the Second World War!!
