La Isla

La Isla is a village, and a bay, and an island, in Colunga, Asturias. The photo shows the island (called, as is Gibraltar, El Peñón) and the bay, looking away from the village. Prominent in the foreground, and the point of the photo, are the trenches. In the Spanish Civil War local republican forces in Asturias faced airborne attacks from Franco´s and Hitler´s forces. Hitler, like Mussolini further east, used Spain for pre-World War 2 dress rehearsals. Republican forces waited in these trenches to fire their weapons at the incoming aircraft.
