Anne Brontë
Anne Brontë
‘When I tell you not to marry without love, I do not advise you to marry for love alone - there are many, many other things to be considered.’
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
Here lies Anne Brontë overlooking her beloved Scarborough having died aged 29 in the May of 1849 from tuberculosis. An horrendous death that today would be treated with antibiotics.
Her sister, Emily, died in the same way in the previous December.
Charlotte would succumb to the same illness in spring 1855 with her unborn child.
Shocking reality of life and death in Victorian Britain.
This spot, in the graveyard at Scarborough’s St Mary’s churchyard, nestles beneath the ruins of the old castle.
I took the photo then waited awhile as the air weaved its magic around me.
Quite something.
The grave is the one on the right of the photo.
