leaking news:  Wessex Water engineer Colin came this morning - well acquainted with the house and remembered the cliff fire we had in the 1960s - he must have been a very young lad working for the fire service then.  i remember that day. mum and dad couldn't decide whether to drive us children to safety or if they should try to save our home.  thank goodness for the fire brigade.  their panic is embedded in my brain and now we have so many tourists lighting BBQs on tinder dry grassland every summer, i'm thinking about this more than is good for me!
(the fire at that time was started by tourist children on the foot path to the beach).

anyway, Colin confirmed that the leak was probably from the failed seals on the cisterns.  this afternoon Pete the Plumber came and replaced them.
Colin also gave us a form to fill in so we are not charged for the water we had no idea was being wasted.
