Accident Vs. design.
FIRST Task? Define "Variety." I, rightly or wrongly, think my way down the classifications thus - King Peter Can Operate for Giant steamrollers; though it may have altered since "Fun Guys" earned their own category "Planimal"or "Animant"?
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
THEN you bother about "varietal" names - BUT - I just asked the internet "How many varieties of Snowdrop?" Expecting, at best, a vague answer like, maybe, "in excess of X,000" NO!
I, eventually discovered - One source told me -
"Feb 8, 2021 · There are about 20 known species of snowdrop, native to Europe and the Middle East but there are over 2,500 different varieties, cultivars and hybrids!"
and another, immediately below, said
"There are 19 species of snowdrops in addition to G. nivalis, and many of them have produced cultivars and hybrids, resulting in over 1,000 named varieties." (AHA that's WHY - 19+Nivalis = 20) this one went on to say - "Most are not available in the U.S. due to treaty restrictions; however, a diligent search yields a nice collection."
I damnearly omitted the point? Last two visits to a garden centre have shown a number with previously unseen green markings on the "outers". Last time I think it was Woronowii; this time "Snow Fox"
