Barnacles

I came across this rock at the beach covered with barnacles. A group of barnacles is called Cirripedia. They are filter feeders that attach to hard surfaces like rocks, pilings and buoys. They are sensitive to cold or dry weather.
They can live for 5 to 20 years, depending on the species and size. They build calcium based shells and grow by adding calcium carbonate to their shells. Pretty cool stuff.
