The Bass Rock - home of the Gannet

The fireworks from the end of the Tattoo just after midnight as seen from our attic, provided me - I thought - with today's blip. But when visiting my mother in North Berwick we drove to Dunbar for lunch and had a tour round the countryside which was looking superb in the afternoon sunshine. Tantallon Castle stood out as did the Bass Rock but, sadly, each time we passed by without the sunshine on it.

As I left my mother's late afternoon the sun broke through again and I made a detour. I'm glad I did. The rock stands out with its 150,000 plus gannets on it, turning the rock white with their bodies - and deposits. It is the largest rock colony of gannets in the world and can be seen from many parts of the east coast. In fact the northern gannet is named after the Rock.

There will be fireworks another time.
