SCAMP

This miner’s statue was officially unveiled in Burntwood in Staffordshire, in June 2013..

Scamp: The Miner and Pit Pony, is the work of Peter Walker, who was at the time, Lichfield Cathedral Artist-in-Residence. It is sculpted in bronze and demonstrates the long history and heritage of the mining industry in the Burntwood area. Later the names of over 70 miners were added to a plaque placed alongside the statue.

It is in the heart of this little-known Staffordshire town and I must confess that I didn’t give it due notice for years as I went into our lovely, thriving Library, the interesting modern building just across the road.

I’m glad I decided to blip Scamp, and find out more about it.

SCAMP stands for Sankey’s Corner Arts Miner Project…..
