Glam Grandma Fitting

Cristina is competing in an “Upcycle Fashion Event” on March 2nd. It’s all about sustainable fashion, and each designer in the competition was given a couple of wads of used fabric—they didn’t get to choose, they had to take whatever they were given. Then they were to design an outfit using that fabric only—no additions. Cristina asked Bella. No. Evan. No. Her friend Kelly. No. And so she came around to me, and I would do anything for Cristina, so it became “Glam Grandma.” This is totally out of my zone, but here we go. She came over to my place today to do a fitting.

Fashion students will do my hair and makeup (I’ll have a streak of pink in my hair), and Cristina showed me her vision board on Pinterest—it’s an array of old women with oversized glasses, combat boots, and vibrant colors. The current trend started with a Zambian grandmother whose granddaughter is a stylist in New York, but the way-maker was Iris Apfel, who signed a modeling contract at the age of 97 and was famous for wearing “statement” eyeglasses.

I get to pick the music that will play as I stride down the catwalk. I’ve chosen Freedom by Jon Batiste. That music can inspire me to do just about anything.
