Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing a small exhibition of Ernest Shepard's original illustrations for The Wind in the Willows at Nymans.
It was a delight to see the small pictures, some black and white sketches and some coloured, and recognise scenes from the book. The picture on the left-hand page was there, and the book is true to the original colours.
Ernest Shepard was a friend of the family that owned Nymans, the Messels ( ancestors of Lord Snowdon ),and parts of the house appear in some of the book's illustrations.
