Sitting in the car, looking at the steering wheel, I just remembered the left hand drive Volksvagen Beetle that my Father bought for £50 from an RAF film unit in 1946 when he was AOC Northern Italy after the war. 

The next year he and my Mother, who had joined him out there when she was demobbed from the WAAF, drove it back to the UK.

What was fun was that he had fitted an altimeter from a Messerschmitt Bf109 so they could track how high there were on their way home, as many of the bridges had been destroyed.

He kept it for nine years and sold it for £90!

He replaced it with a Mark II Ford Consul
