A Path to Where

When I see sights like this, it gives me shivers. This house has been inhabited by the same people as when I moved on to the estate. This walkway tells me that someone inside probably needs a wheelchair to gain access to the house and is not likely to get better.

I'm relating it to my own experience.

Another dreadfully dreary day. Len took Basil for a walk this morning, I took him out with Cecily once the film Scott of the Antarctic had finished. It seemed a very accurate telling of events and recreated the famous photo of Scott with five companions at the South Pole.

Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer, reached the South Pole five weeks before Scott. Later he conceded that he had not acted totally honourably towards Scott. He had only revealed his true destination to the men of his expedition after sailing from Madeira.

Both men carried out meticulous planning, but Amundsen and his colleagues were more practised in using skis and understanding the worth of dogs for sledging. Of 52 dogs that started his expedition, only 11 survived. Many had been killed for meat. Overall Amundsen must be praised for his planning and execution. but Scott trumped him when it came to a literary record. He kept a diary until the day he died.
