Galanthus
The appearance of Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) around the Village - including some in obscure, neglected corners of green space such as here - has brought some cheer to the continually damp, grey weather we have experienced since Friday.
The weather has however meant that few if any of the flowers have fully opened; still, this gives us the opprtunity to appreciate the shape of the emerged but unopened flowers, explaining why our ancestors chose to identify these blooms as 'drops' (though we just have to imagine the 'snow' element of the common name in our current climate situation!)
