Stanza Stones: Snow

A trip to Huddersfield today. I’ve previously visited the “village” on the outskirts where my mum was born and brought up, but not the town itself. She talked about it a lot. There is a lot that I think she would have remembered - many fine Victorian and Edwardian stone buildings. The university would be a total surprise however.

I decided to return via Marsden and to see if I could find the nearby Stanza Stone. Some years ago a poetry trail was created, starting in a quarry near Marsden. A poem written by poet laureate Simon Armitage is inscribed into stones, each poem reflecting some aspect of water. The one near Marsden is about Snow. It can be read by looking at in “large”. Or googling.

When I left Huddersfield it was lightly drizzling, and I was thinking that I ought to be visiting another of the stones. But having walked up a very steep slope and found the quarry, it started to snow. Quite extraordinary.

I might try and see if I can find the other stones over time.
