A Meandering Life...

MMC2025 :: Day 7 :: Time & Travel

Mono Month Challenge 2025

On this day in 1884 Greenwich Mean Time was adopted as the world's standard time. Later that year some boffins at the Meridian Conference in Washington DC officially established GMT as the Prime Meridian for global timekeeping. This also designated the Royal Observatory, Greenwich as the reference point for global longitude. The Royal Observatory was established by Charles II 350 years ago in 1675.

All this means is here in Northallerton I’m in the Western Hemisphere by 1.43 degrees (West) but where I use to live in Orpington, at 0.1 degrees (East) I was in the Eastern Hemisphere. Minor differences like these have started wars in the past!

Here I’ve snapped my late grandparent’s Anniversary clock using my OM-1 controlled by my iPhone. The clock doesn’t care where it is, it has never worked since I got it.
