Brassica rapa pekinensis

Also called  Napa cabbage.

Today I passed by the Chinese bazaar, where a kind old lady grows vegetables in front of the shop. I went in and finally dared to ask the shop assistant if they sold the vegetables I could see in the orchard.
He was surprised: “No, we don’t sell them. Besides, they are too small now, you will have to wait until they are bigger.”
I pointed to some huge green leaves in the garden and said: “Do you mean those leaves are too small?” He didn’t say anything, but he opened a bunch of leaves and showed me a tiny cauliflower inside. “You see, they are too small.”
“I see,” I said.
“Wait a minute,” he added and spoke in Chinese to the old lady who looks after the orchard and she came to me with these two fresh Napa cabbages and gave them to me.
“How much are they?” I asked. “Nothing, they are for our customers,” the man said.
I thanked them and left the garden very happy with my gift. Maybe in two weeks I will have to buy something at the bazaar and she will give me a cauliflower then.
