A Lick And A Promise

Backblip posted 03/02/2025. Broadband still down.

A beautifully bright but very cold and frosty morning. I decided to go to Fishers Green as I have photographed great crested grebes doing their 'penguin dance' on 2nd February in the past. I usually visit in the afternoon but chose to go in the morning this time. The roads had not been treated and were terribly slippery. As I drove very carefully down the hill a car was being recovered from the ditch.

The tell-tale sign that grebes are in the mood is their calls. I couldn't hear anything and only saw a couple of singletons. I did see and photograph the first water rail that I have seen not from a hide. I've chosen to post this muntjac doe giving herself a wash in the sunshine under a tree on the far bank of the Old River Lea.

When I returned home another car was in the ditch on the other side of the hill road. I sat with the window open in the sunshine and watched in a traffic jam for three quarters of an hour as the emergency services dealt with it.
