Garden birds

The morning started crisp, frosty and very cold. I was amused to see a pigeon standing on ice in the bird bath, with his mate clinging to the rim of the bath, both leaning forward and pecking at the only small circle of water available. A gorgeous golden hour followed, when I spotted this robin up in the oak tree branches, just begging to have his photo taken. I obliged.

Later in the morning I filled the fat ball feeder and afterwards spotted a male and a female blackbird hopping about underneath it, pecking away at the scraps that had fallen. I went out with some sultanas and sprinkled a few nearby, hoping they would return and find them. I have been trying to encourage blackbirds into my garden for a while, ever since I learned from fellow blipper Rainette that they are somewhat partial to sultanas, but to date have drawn a blank every time. Imagine my delight, then, when first the female and then the male duly turned up and helped themselves. I think they probably only ate one sultana each, and the rest went to the scavenging squirrels, but nevertheless it made my day.
