An Alternative View Of Pond Life
We headed out a bit earlier today to continue our tour of Kentish towns and villages. Our original destination was Brenchley - which we had passed through a few days ago on our journey home from Matfield.
We were intending to stop there for a pint and maybe a spot of lunch but both of what we thought were public houses - The Bull and The Rose & Crown - turned out to be have been converted into holiday apartments, with minuscule cafe attached, and private homes respectively.
We still had a walk around this delightfully compact little village but could find nothing else that met our refreshment needs so decided to continue our journey through nearby Horsmonden and on to the hilltop village of Goudhurst.
Sadly we were to discover that its main pub had closed since our last visit so we made the steep climb to the top of the village to frequent The Star & Eagle Hotel which we could see was actually open as the lights were on and there were people sitting by the windows. It felt wonderfully old fashioned inside and we had a lovely greeting from the landlady, ordered a sausage roll and salad lunch with a pint of lager each and took our seats at a window table with sweeping views of the valley below and the countryside beyond. The food and and the beer were great and we even got to eavesdrop on a conversation where an elderly gentlemen appeared to be on the end of quite the browbeating from his seemingly exasperated wife!
Fed and watered we then decided we should have an amble around the village itself. It was another unsparingly grey day and I was having trouble getting an image until I decided on this alternative view of the village's pond and accompanying duck house.
