Grandfather Clock

Over to Tideswell today to visit friends P and A.

They are fans of mechanical clocks. When it comes to striking the hour it’s quite a cacophony of sound, and the various clocks (five of which chime) all seem to take it in turns, never at the same time.

This is the face of their grandfather clock. It was made in Tideswell in the mid 18th century by Samuel Ashton, although no one knows where his clock workshop was. A’s grandparents had it, and in this house, although she doesn’t know who the previous owners were. It will have seen some changes in the way Derbyshire people live in its lifetime.
