Caught a pre-dawn Le Shuttle from Calais to Folkestone. The temperature was hovering around 0C as we went through passport control and the van inspection - I think they were disappointed/surprised that the large cargo bay had only a couple of trolley bags and a case of wine in it! We were second onto a very empty train and came out in Folkestone at the moment the sun rose in a clear sky.
The road north was more or less ok apart from a couple of Waze misdirections and a major hold up due to a vehicle fire on the M6 on the toll stretch north of Birmingham. We arrived in Largs at 8.20 pm, the most challenging part of the whole 2,400km journey from Barcelona being the final 50km into Largs. Given that the Spanish vehicle has the steering wheel on the ‘wrong’ side, Dd felt quite exposed in the passenger seat on the side of the van immediately parallel to the middle of the very narrow twisty roads which we navigated in pitch blackness in the face of oncoming cars that sometimes were slow to dip their main beams!
We got through it and were relieved to dump the van and head straight off to the local Indian, Kohi Noor, for a celebratory curry and beer!
