Get Ready

New Zealand does get referred to as the “shaky Isles” as we do have a lot of earthquakes- some very small, but some very significant ones too.

In Wānaka, our major threat is from the Alpine Fault, which runs 600km on the Southern Alps of the South Island. Historically, when it ruptured, it produces an earthquake of magnitude 8.0. (info from GNS Science).
Another rupture is predicted within 50 years…

Today there was information and First Responders to talk with. There is a real push to educate us, and for us to be self reliant for at least 3 weeks without power, water, food supplies etc.

It’s very easy for us not to think about it, but I’m pleased we have had discussions with neighbours as to how we could look out for each other, if necessary.

My photo is of one of the fire trucks. It was good to talk with them and to acknowledge their voluntary work - they attend accidents, fires, medical emergencies and are called via a very loud siren, that must really give visitors a fright!

I’ve taken one more step today to “get ready” - I’ve written a list of things I have yet to do….!

Thank you for your comments on yesterdays photos. Have a super weekend.
