Lost and found

This afternoon I walked up to the High Road to post a couple of birthday cards. I chose the box deliberately – there is one much nearer my house – because I knew I would find this lovely drift of snowdrops right beside it, and I was not disappointed.

Having been pleased to find my snowdrops, imagine my dismay on getting home when I discovered that I’d lost something pretty important. I had received an email from our financial adviser earlier today with a document attached, and I went to file the document in its usual place on my Mac, only to find that the destination folder had disappeared. I have a Time Machine backup disk on my desk, but it’s only been in use since last September (the previous one having filled up and stopped backing up) and the folder was nowhere to be seen. This told me that I must have deleted the folder some time before September 2024.

Fortunately, I’m a manic backer-up of files, choosing to go for a belt and preferably two pairs of braces approach (!) so I was able to interrogate my online Backblaze backup account. After several minutes I found the missing folder in a May 2024 backup and was able to retrieve it and put it back on my Mac. Quite how I managed to delete the folder last May I have no idea, but I was so relieved, it was a very important file of pension information going back some years.

All I can say is, thank goodness for Backblaze!
