Kawarau River

Driving through the Kawarau Gorge is a fascinating experience, even though we have travelled there many times. The Kawarau River (main photo) has carved this dramatic deep-sided gorge.

Just upstream from this photo is the Roaring Meg Powerhouse.
The powerhouse was built early in New Zealand's hydroelectricity history, being commissioned in 1936. Many much larger hydro schemes have been built since, and hydroelectricity currently provides more than half of New Zealand's electricity needs.

In extras, images of the Roaring Meg Powerhouse.
