Rennie's Lockgates

This is one of two gates designed by engineer John Rennie in the early 19th century. They used to close off the wet docks from the river to keep the water level steady, much like on canal, but these days the docks themselves have been infilled to form car parking. Rennie must be turning in his grave!!

The gates sit beside a swing bridge, which has just been refurbished but no longer moves. Today it just provides extra outdoor seating for the Teutchers bar. I'm looking forward to a day warm enough...

There are so many remnants of Leith's industrial past if you look.
