Hellebore

Yet another wet day.
Rather a sombre day too because it is Holocaust Memorial  Day, and eighty years since the  liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp. Some heartbreaking recollections in today's Guardian by a few of the now elderly survivors, and a very moving and disturbing TV programme tonight called "The Last Musician of Auschwitz" about the music produced by the  prisoners in Auschwitz on the orders of their guards. There were several orchestras in the prison, whose members were forced to play to save their own lives, while at the same time providing a grotesque accompaniment to the murder of  thousands of others. It included powerful testimony by the Jewish cellist Anita Lasker- Wallfisch, who at 99 years old is the only surviving member of the  women's orchestra in Auschwitz.( After the war she  went on to found  the English Chamber Orchestra. ) Six million Jews and several million other people  were killed by the Nazis during WW2.

My blip is a Hellebore flower from my garden.
