Broken
The Shark is Broken, about the filming of Jaws, wowed the Edinburgh Fringe and many critics, has been nominated for prestigious theatre awards and, over the last five years, has been performed in the West End, on Broadway and in Toronto. It's now touring the UK and Ireland.
20 hours after seeing it, I'm still wondering what I missed.
At one point, one of the three characters asked what Jaws was about. The first answer was something esoteric/philosophical that I've forgotten. The second was 'responsibility' and the third was 'It's about a shark, stupid'.
So is this play is about the making of Jaws? That just might be interesting but it's not this play. It could be about how three bored men holed up in a boat argue, but if so [sigh], could you just leave that writing to Pinter, please?
I suspect it's Ian Shaw, who co-wrote the play, working through his grief for his alcoholic dad, Robert Shaw (Quint), whom he has played in every production. I hope it's working for him, but it's not enough to hold this member of the audience.
But the set - a constantly changing sea and sky on a screen in the background is great.
